PABNA, May 3: Due to continuous severe heatwave for the last few weeks, dairy farms have been affected, causing fall in milk production.

According to field sources, dairy farm owners are now in trouble with their cows.

Along with the decrease in the milk production, the demand of milk has also come down. Beef prices have increased. Farm owners are counting losses.

While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer, farm owners in different villages in Pabna Sadar, Faridpur, Santhia, and Bera upazilas said, the milk production has decreased by 15 to 20 per cent.

Cows are getting sick due to the extreme heat, with high fever and stomach nausea.

According to sources at the Department of Livestock Resources (DoLS)-Pabna, there are 6,643 dairy farms in the district, having  7.54 lakh  cows; the total milk production in the district is 4.75 lakh metric tons (MT).

After meeting the districts demand, 2.25 lakh MT milk is supplied to different districts of the country including Dhaka.

Milk is supplied by different dairy farms in Faridpur, Bhangura, Bara, and Santhia upazilas to other districts through different companies.

Farmers said, they have to run fans round the clock to protect cows  from heavy heat; besides, cows have to be bathed three to four times in a day by cold water; their electricity consumption has increased almost twice.

Shafiur Rimon, a farm owner in Nabuvarenga Village of  Bara Upazila, said, the digestion of cows is decreasing; milk production has decreased by about 20 per cent; also the cost has increased due to increase of fodder price; due to reduced demand of milk is selling  at Tk 45 to 50 per litter.

Abdus Samad Mridha, a farm owner of Brihaspatipur Village in  Santhia Upazila, said, "My milk production has decreased to nine maunds from 10.5 maunds per day; costs have increased in various ways; we always take doctors advice to keep cows healthy."

Afsar Ali, a milk trader of Nadia Gadai Village in Santhia Upazila, said, "Every day I would sell seven maund milk. Now I am getting 5.5 maunds."

President of Pabna Faridpur Upazila Bangladesh Dairy Farm Association-Pabna District Branch General Secretary Md Saiful Islam said, "With the heat, the cost of raising cows has also increased; cows need extra water; and they need bath three to four times in a day, requiring additional workers."

There are 60 cows in his farm, having six to seven workers to look after these.

"Price of per bag wheat husk has increased to Tk 150 from 100; and the husk cost has increased to Tk 700 from 500 for each cow in a week," he added.

District Livestock Services Officer Dr Gaurang Kumar Talukder said, "In summer, the consumption of cattle naturally decreases; so the milk production decreases slightly."

"Farmhouses should be kept cool," he added.

"They should be fed grass and bathed two/three times a day. In addition, if any cow is sick, veterinary doctor should be contacted quickly," the official maintained.
