The Debate for Democracy (DFD), a non-governmental organisation that seeks to develop the quality of life of current and future generations through debate, has recommended 10 points including prioritising students opinion through an election if they are in favour of politics at the educational institutions across the country or not, especially in the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Refraining from making students weapons to implement the political parties agenda, participating in student union polls with the identity of general student rather than the banner of student wing of different political parties and forming a special tribunal with an aim to try different forms of irregularities including killing, sexual abuse, tender manipulation and recruitment-trade on the campus were included in the recommendations made by DFD Chairman Hassan Ahamed Chowdhury Kiron on Saturday.
With an aim to ensure safe educational institutions across the country, the DFD Chairman brought the suggestions to the fore in a debate competition on the turmoil over resumption of student politics at BUET.
Former Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) Vice President Akhtaruzzaman, MP, addressed the function as chief guest at FDC in the capital.
The other recommendations focused on stopping teacher politics, being stricter against ragging, torture cell, seat occupation, extortion and terrorism, ensuring coexistence of students of different political views, recruiting teachers testing talent rather than considering political affiliations, increasing budget for research, scholarship and co-curricular activities and emphasizing proficiency in English language.
Chowdhury Kiron said the BUET administration can scrap the current crisis on the campus by taking students opinion into consideration through an election.
As the BUET is a specialised university, a student cabinet free from organizational politics can be formed to get rid of the crisis, believes Chowdhury Kiron.
Akhtaruzzaman, MP, addressed several inconsistencies and drawbacks in the current political landscape.
He noted that the style of the existing student politics should be changed, adding, "We don want any student union comprising hoodlums."
Debaters of the Primeasia University won the debate on student politics assisting to due educational environment while Stamford University Bangladesh debaters received the runner-up trophy.
