Cumilla tribunal on Tuesday sentenced a youth to death for killing a third-grader after
rape in 2019.
Cumilla Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 judge Abdulla Al Mamun delivered the verdict against Mohammad Ali Bappi, 21, of Chauddagram upazila in the district.
The court also fined him Tk 50,000.
According to the prosecution, the victim, 9, a third grader of Gazaria Government Primary School went missing on March 15, 2019.
Later on March 16, 2019, police recovered the body of the child, wrapped in a quilt, from the Dakatia River.
The victim's father lodged a case with Chauddagram Police Station as the plaintiff.
Following the case, police conducted drives and arrested Bappi suspecting his movement. During interrogation, Bappi admitted his guilt saying that he lured the child saying that he will giver her snacks to eat and took her to his empty room where he violated the child.
After violating her, he strangled the girl to death with her scarf and dumped the body in the river.
On June 2, 2019, the investigation officer of the case SI Iqbal Monir pressed a charge-sheet before the court against two accused Bappi and Md Mizan.
After hearing 10 witnesses and examining evidences, the court delivered the death penalty to Bappi.
The court also acquitted the other accused Mizan as the allegations, brought against him were not proven.
