
Bangladesh chess player Mohammad Fahad Rahman who became an International Master in 2019 now achieved his first Grandmaster norm after five years of effort on Sunday in Vietnam.
IM Fahad will need two more norms in 18 games to become a Grandmaster.
He achieved this success by securing seven points in nine games at the Hanoi GM3 Chess Tournament, March 2024, GMB-1 in Hanoi, Vietnam. At the same time, he became the runner-up of the event and increased his 20 FIDE rating from this event.
IM Quizon Daniel of the Philippines became champion in the event with the same number of points and Grandmaster norm.
IM Fahad defeated FIDE Master Banh Gia Hay of Vietnam in the ninth or final round match in the morning on Sunday. A total of 10 players including three Grand Masters, three International Masters and three FIDE Masters from Bangladesh, the Czech Republic, India, the Philippines, and Vietnam participated in the round-robin league event.
Bangladesh Police has financially sponsored IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman to participate in the two competitions, Hanoi Grand Master-2 Chess, March 2024, GMA-1 and Hanoi GM3 Chess Tournament, March 2024, GMB-1 held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman will be returning home today (Monday) at 4:15 PM.
