A five-day Jamdani Mela-2024, jointly organised by Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) and Bangladesh National Museum started at Nalinikant Bhattsali Art Gallery of the National Museum at Shahbagh.

The fair, opened on March 30 and will continue to April 3, and has been focused at supporting the sale and display of products produced by the countrys Jamdani weavers.

At a program held at the fair ground on Sunday, Senior Secretary to Ministry of Industries Zakia Sultana formally inaugurated it as chief guest.

Among others, Cultural Affairs Secretary Khalil Ahmed and Director General of Bangladesh National Museum Md. Kamruzzaman also spoke while Chairman of BSCIC Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik presided over the opening ceremony.

According to the organizers, BSCIC has been working as the main sponsor of Jamdani cloths, a traditional product of Bangladesh since long ago. Jamdani Industrial City was built on 20 acres of land under the supervision of BSCIC in Noapara village of Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj in 1993.

In 2016, BSCIC received certificate of recognition for Jamdani, the first geographical indication product of Bangladesh.

BSS Adds: Senior Secretary of the Industries Ministry Zakia Sultana said Jamdani, the most artistic textile of Bangladeshi weavers, will be branded internationally as its alternative is now rare in the contemporary world.

"Jamdani is unparallel due to its quality weaving technique and beautiful design ... and now it is time to branding the fabric across the world as an alternative of Muslin," she said.

To this end, she said necessary initiatives have already been taken on behalf of the concerned ministry.

Of the initiatives include imparting training to the entrepreneurs engaged with this industry, manufacturing of international standard packing, providing incentives for export and arrangement of showcasing at all Bangladeshi foreign missions.

As the fabrics are very much comfortable, so it is very much preferred to the foreigners across the world, Zakia Sultana said, adding: "A training programme has began for the young weavers on March 11, this year as they are not expert at all about the design of the saris."
