ICT Chief Prosecutor Ghulam Arieff Tipoo passes away

Ghulam Arieff Tipoo, the Chief Prosecutor of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), died at a hospital in the capital on Friday morning.

He was 93.

He breathed his last around 8am while undergoing treatment at Lab Aid Hospital, prosecutor Mokhlesur Rahman Badal confirmed the news.

He was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia six days ago.

Born on August 28, 1931, in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district, Ghulam Arieff Tipoo passed  his secondary exam from Kaliarhar School in 1948 and his higher secondary exam from Rajshahi College in 1950. Tipu after completing graduation from the Rajshahi College in Law and later took admission to Dhaka University for higher studies.

He served as the general secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra Union from 1954 to 1956. Tipoo began his career in law in 1958.

He has served as Rajshahi Bar Council president, Rajshahi University senate and syndicate member, and Bangladesh Bar Council member.

The government appointed him as the chief of the war crimes prosecution panel in 2010 when the tribunal was formed to try the people involved in crimes committed during the Liberation War in 1971.

He also led the Language Movement in Rajshahi in 1952. 

He was honoured with the ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 2019 for his role in the Language Movement.
