DIGHINALA, KHAGRACHHARI, Mar 4: The deplorable Hazachhara Road linking Dighinala-Baghaichhari Road in Dighinala Upazila of the district is causing immense public sufferings.
The distance of Dighinala Upazila from Chhotamerung Bazar to Baghaichhari Upazila is only six kilometre (KM).
The communication between these two upazilas could be made in a short time on this brick-soiled road. But recently the road has been unfit for communication as it has developed cracks at different points.
Locals said, if the road is not repaired soon, transports can move on it in the next rainy season.
A recent visit found the 6km road deplorable.
According to field sources, the distance from Dighinala Sadar Upazila to Baghaichhari on pucca road is 28 km. The distance from Merung Union to Upazila Sadar is 12 km.
People of Merung Union have to pass 40 km pucca road for going to Baghaichhari.
It is only 6 km distance from Merung Bazar to Baghaichhari Upazila.
In 2022, the road became activated after completion of a bridge over the Maini River in Chhota Merung Bazar area at about Tk 5 crore. Later on, the movement of transports on the road increased. But recently the road has been unfit for transport movement due to breaking.
Few months back, a jeep committed accident at Batala point, killing one.
A local dweller Md Abdur Rahman said, the bridge over the Maini River has fulfilled the dream of Merung Union and Baghaichhari Upazila. But in the absence of a cemented link road, transports are moving taking risk of life. "I demand repairing of the road soon," he added.
Merung Union Chairman Mahmuda Begum Luki confirmed the worse condition of the road. It needs to metalise the road soon to link Dighinala and Baghaichhari upazilas and expand businesses, she added.
A motor cycle rider Bijoy Chakma said, "Earlier I would move on the road with passengers regularly. The road was good. But now I have to move in fear of accident at any time."
"I demand of the government to repair the road," he added.
