The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday upheld a High Court verdict, convicting BNP leader Habibur Rahman Habib for contempt of court and sentencing him to five months imprisonment.
A three-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order, scrapping a leave to appeal petition filed by the BNP leader.
The High Court on November 22 sentenced BNP leader Habib to five-months imprisonment for committing contempt of court by making derogatory comments about a judge.
The HC bench of Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman and Justice Md Bashir Ullah delivered the verdict after hearing the statement of Habibur, who was produced before the bench by police of Sher-e-Bangla police station.
The court also fined him Tk 2,000.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested BNP Chairperson's adviser Habibur Rahman Habib from Mirpur DOHS area of the capital on November 21 as he failed to appear before the court despite a High Court's order in a contempt of court case.
Habib, who is now behind the bars, filed the leave to appeal plea and a plea for bail on February 8, 2024.
Senior advocate Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal moved the pleas for Habib, while Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed argued for the state.
