FENI, Nov 29: The Chhagalnaiya Government College is currently running with 10 teachers only. As a result, the academic activities of about 2,100 students are being seriously hampered.
Of the total 23 posts, 13 are vacant; even principal and vice-principal positions are also vacant. Besides, there are not sufficient classrooms at the college, which is hampering smooth learning environment of the students.
College sources said, the college was established in 1972 and was upgraded to a degree college in 1987 and was nationalised in 1988. Currently, there are around 2,100 students at intermediate and degree classes at the college.
Of the posts, two positions of professors at Bengali Department, two posts each at Philosophy and Economics departments, and one post each at English, Management, Political Science, Accounting, Islamic History, Physics, and Chemistry departments have remained vacant. That means, there are no teachers at Physics, Chemistry, Economics, and Philosophy departments.
While visiting the college recently, the students were found attending the classes with much hazard. Around five/six students have to share the same bench during a class.
Nasrin, a student of Class XI and Nusrat Jahan Shyama, of degree class at the college said, since there are no teachers for the creative subjects like English, so they are facing much setback in preparing their lessons. As a result, they have to attend private tuition run by the teachers of other colleges, they added.
Vice-Principal of Chhagalnaiya Government College Bimal Kanti Pal said, "If new buildings are not established, the classroom crisis will not be solved. Though there is enough space on the campus, but still no building can be constructed immediately due to fund crisis and other complexities."
Principal of the college Professor Mohammad Abu Hanif said, "If the vacant posts are filled and new posts are created, the academic activities here may get boost. We send letters in each month to the education ministry asking for circulation to appoint teachers, but there is no response."
