CHATTOGRAM, Feb 11: Students of Chemistry Department of Chittagong University on Sunday held demonstration in protest against the inaction of the university administration in taking action even after 11 days after filing a complaint against a teacher accused of attempted rape.
The students announced that they will continue their protests until the accused teacher was removed and a case was filed against him. The students held the demonstration in front of the administrative building of the university holding placards and chanting slogans demanding a safe campus and punishment of the accused teacher.
The offices of the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Registrar are located in the administrative building of the University. At one point, the university authorities promised to resolve the issue quickly.
Students of the chemistry department told the Daily Observer, We have two demands, sacking the accused teacher and the filing a case against him by the university authorities. The protests will continue until the demands are met, they said.
The Syndicate meeting of the university is scheduled to be held on Tuesday. The CU authorities assured the students that a decision might be taken.
The protesters said, The accused teacher harassed students in various ways on social media. He used to send obscene SMS to students and make video calls.
Many former students are his victims, they said adding this teacher has lost his moral right to come to the campus. We don want such teachers.
Earlier, a student of CU chemistry department complained that this teacher sexually harassed a female student when she was studying for her post-graduate thesis.
The student submitted a complaint to the Vice-Chancellor against Professor Dr Mahbubul Matin, Professor of Chemistry Department and Supervisor of her thesis. Since then, the students started holding demonstration demanding this teachers punishment after investigation.
The incident of attempted rape is still being investigated by the complaint committee. Zarin Akhtar, director of the universitys Institute of Forestry and Environment, convenor of the grievance committee, told the Daily Observer, It may take two or three days to submit the probe report.
Earlier, the sexual harassment cell of the university started investigating the complaint made against Dr Mahbubul Matin. Mahbubul Matin has been suspended.
