Amid the apprehension of division since last few months due to the inner conflict between Jatiya Partys Chairman GM Quader and Chief Patron Raushan Ershad, the Jatiya Party (JP), formed by former military ruler HM Ershad, has finally divided again into two factions.

Expelling JP Chairman GM Quader and Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu from their party position, partys Chief Patron Raushan Ershad on Sunday gave announcement of a new central committee at a press conference.

In the press conference, Raushan Ershad declared herself the new chairperson of the party while expelled JP presidium member Kazi Mamunur Rashid as its new general secretary.

Earlier, Raushan Ershad, wife of the partys founder HM Ershad, held at meeting with the partys senior, dedicated, expelled and deprived leaders at her residence in Gulshan.

"According to Article 20(1) of the partys constitution, I have dismissed GM Quader and Mujibul Haque Chunnu," Raushan said during a view-exchange meeting.

She said JP presidium member Kazi Mamunur Rashid will be the new general secretary of the party.

Mamunur Rashid will manage the organisational activities of the party until the next council meeting of the party, Raushan added.

Explaining her sudden decision, Raushan said, "I cannot allow the party to suffer. JP is going through a grievous period, and GM Quader and Mujibul Haque have caused significant damage to the party."

In the event, the partys expelled, exempted, and voluntarily resigned leaders and workers of JP, including exempted presidium members Sunil Shubo Roy, Shafiqul Islam Sentu and Raushan Ershads spokesperson Kazi Mamunur Rashid attended.

Meanwhile, following the announcement, JP Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu rejected the announcement of Raushan by calling an urgent press conference at the party chairmans office at noon.

Chunnu claimed that Raushan Ershad doesn have any authority in the Jatiya Partys (JP) constitution to expel anyone from the party.

He also said that the JP doesn take into consideration Raushan Ershads declaration as the chairman of the party expelling GM Quader.

Referring to such an announcement of Raushan, the JP secretary general said, "We are not taking it into our knowledge as it has no basis. She (Raushan) doesn have any such authority in the partys constitution."

Chunnu also pointed out that there is no section in the constitution that the partys chief patron can expel anyone from the party. "Raushan also expelled GM Quader twice earlier. Its the third time. Then she withdrew her announcement."

Mentioning that every party has a constitution, the JP secretary general said Jatiya Party took part in the national election. GM Quader allocated the symbols among the candidates. So, he is the party chairman according to the rules of the Election Commission, while Mujibul Huque Chunnu is the secretary general.

The pro-Raushan Ershad faction in the JP said earlier the grassroots level of the party did not extend any support to the incidents of expulsion but they (GM Quader and Mujibul Huque Chunnu) would not be able to sustain this time.

Responding to such a query, Chunnu said it is totally undesirable as their remarks indicate that they are like illiterate people. "Any individual can say anything going beyond the constitution, but those remarks have no basis."
