Brickfield in Amtali village damages environment

AMTALI, BARGUNA, Jan 24: A brickfield in Mahishdanga Village in Amtali Upazila of the district is burning wood damaging local environment.

The brickfield has been set up in middle of locality and croplands.

In setting up the kiln, the rules and regulations of the government were not maintained.

Under the rules and regulations, it requires hybrid Hoffman, geo-bags, vertical shift kiln and tested environment-friendly technology according to the provisions of the Environment Department and the Forest Ministry.

Without filling these and by managing the local administration, the brickfield has been set up.

A visit found burning of wood in MKB Bricks. Its proprietor Sobhan Kazi was seen piecing wood in a sawmill nearby the kiln.

Kiln labourers said, some coals are piled beside the kiln, and these coals remain unused for year after year.

According to Clause-12 and 4(2) (3) of the Environment Conservation Act-1995 (Amended 2010), it is punishable offence to set up brickfields in cropland or beside croplands.

Locals said, the owner of the kiln is very influential.

When asked about burning wood, its owner Sobhan Kazi made no commnent in this regard.

Amtali Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Munayem Saad said, the brickfield in the locality is causing heath risk to common people and children.

Additional Magistrate of Barguna Shuvra Das said, against illegal kilns, drives will be conducted in phase.

Over mobile phone, Director (Additional charge) of the Environment Department-Barishal Md Iqbal Hossain, said, legal action will be taken against the law-breaking brickfields.
