A worker of a Readymade Garments Factory (RMG) was killed after a truck ran over him at Tongi area in the capital on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Atiqur Rahman, 40, hailed from Gaibandha, worked at the Eastern Textile factory in Tongi.
Tongi West Police Station officer-in-charge Sakhawat Hossain confirmed the matter.
According to locals, Atiqur was returning home after working at the factory around 7pm on Tuesday. He died on the spot when a Gazipur-bound truck hit him while he was crossing the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in front of the factory.
When the death news spread out, hundreds of workers of the factory blocked the highway and protested. Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway was halted for about an hour.
Atiqur's body was sent to Gazipur Shahid Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, according to OC Sakhawat.
His family members have been notified and they are expected to make their way to Tongi at the earliest, said the OC.
Traffic police seized the truck from the Signboard area of the city.
Meanwhile Atiqur's agitating co-workers were eventually persuaded to cease their protests, or move somewhere else. As they complied, traffic movement was normalized, he added.
