KHULNA, Jan 23: The city is in a festive mood with seasonal pitha shops  during the winter season.
Ignoring bone-chilly cold, pitha shops along footpaths and roadsides are getting huge customers. With start of the sunset, pitha eaters are coming to crowd the shops.

Different types of pitha including Chitai are made by them using clay and gas-run ovens. Easters consume Chitai Sharisha( mashed mustard), mashed green chilli and date-molasses. Steamed and oiled pie locally known as panpitha is made of date-molasses and coconut slices.
A recent visit found numerous such winter  pitha shops at road junctions and footpaths in various areas, such as Rupsa Ferryghat, Satraster Mor, Dolkhola Mor, Sib Barir Mor, Sonadanga Bus Stand, New Market, in front of Jatisongho Shishu Park, in front of Pioneer College, Nirala Mor, Boyra Bazar Cross, Gallamari Bazar, Khalishpur, Daulatpur, and Fulbariget in the city.
The visit found common people among the customers mostly.

Shukhi Begum, 65, a seasonal pitha shopper at Nirala crossing said, she is making pitha for pedestrians to mitigate their food needs.

"I have been selling seasonal pitha in various areas in ten years. This year I am selling pitha along with my younger sister who has recently lost her husband."

Shukhi Begum said, "We came from Morrelganj Upazila after losing our house due to cyclone Sidr in 2007."

"We are selling pitha every evening from 5:30 pm in the hope of good profit at limited cost. The two sisters earn Tk 900 to 1,200 per day. Making Vapa Pitha takes less time but is profitable," she added.

They sell all kinds of pitha including Patisapata, Nakshi Pitha, Pakkan Pitha etc.

Nuruzzaman, a pitha seller in front of citys Jatisongho Shishu Park, said, prices of different commodities slightly increased this year than last few years.

"The price of each Vapa (steamed pitha) is Tk 10-20 according to the size, Patisapta Pitha at Tk 20 and Panpitha (oil-fried pitha) at Tk 10. The cheap pitha is Chitai, selling at Tk 5 only," he added.

Fazlur Rahman, a private service holder said, "When I was a child, I went to my village along with my parents. At that time, date-juice was available at a lower cost. Now I don always go to the village house. So, to taste winter pitha, I often come here."

Salma Akter, a primary school teacher, said "It cannot be possible to make pitha at home as I am very busy. So, I come here to buy pitha.  It also saves time and gives the taste of winter. Delicious date juice is not much available in the city. These scenes to the new generation are very unfamiliar. Many are deprived of the taste of date-juice."

"I am pleased as various pitha shops retain the traditional culture of Bangali in Khulna," she added.
