After successful opretaion from Uttara to Motijheel, the government has now been planning to extend the Dhaka Metrorail service upto Tongi. As part of the attempt, the government has already started a survey in this regards.
Earlier, the government extended the Metrorail route upto Kamalapur from Motijheel extending 1.16km new line. The construction of the Metrorail line upto Kamalapur from Motijheel is now undergoing. The work would be completed within June next year, according to the Metrorail authority.
While briefing media after inaugurating the Bangabandhu Corner at Dhaka Mass-Rapid Transport Company Limited (DMTCL) Building at Diabari of Uttara in Dhaka, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Saturday said that a survey is underway for the extension of Metrorail from Uttara to Tongi.
"The construction work of the extended section from Motijheel to Kamalapur will be completed in June next year. After conclusion of the construction, the Kamalapur section would also be opened for operation. Till to date, around 98.95 percent work of Metrorail has been completed," he added.
Regarding construction of underground Metrorail, the minister said, "The Prime Minister has already inaugurated the construction work of the 31.24km underground Metrorail. But, the physical work of the project will fully be started from September this year.
Around 29 percent of land development work has already been completed and tender process is going on. Hope, the work will be completed by December 2026."
Quader, also general secretary of the Awami League, said that the matter of extension of time of Metrorail on various days including Biswa Ijtema and Book Fair, will be discussed and decided later."
The minister said that the maximum convenience of the passengers will be ensured in the Metrorail.
"By 2030, six lines of Metrorail will be launched," he added.
The AL general secretary said that the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman dreamt of building a Sonar Bangla and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led government is working continuously to materialize that dream.
The Metrorail is a unique milestone in building a Smart Bangladesh, he added.
Quader said the PM inaugurated the section of MRT Line-6 from Uttara to Agargaon on December 28, 2022. Later, on November 4, 2023, the PM inaugurated the section of metro rail from Agargaon to Motijheel.
In continuation of this, Metrorail will run from Uttara to Motijheel every day except Friday, he said, adding that from Saturday, Metrorail will depart from Uttara Uttar Metrorail Station to Motijheel at 7:10 am and the last metro train from Motijheel will leave at 8:40 pm for Uttara Uttar Metrorail station.
