7 injured in AL factional clash in N'ganj

Seven people were injured and four vehicles were torched in a clash between two factions of  Awami League at Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj on Tuesday afternoon.

The clash broke out between the supporters of AL backed lawmaker from Narayanganj-1 Golam Dastagir Gazi and defeated candidate Shahjahan Bhuiyan also general secretary of Rupganj upazila AL in front of Daudpur Union Parishad office.

According to locals, a dispute has been created between the two groups as Daudpur UP AL general secretary and UP chairman Nurul Islam Jahangir campaigned for Shahjahan and the union Jubo League president Rafiqul Islam and general secretary Amin Rana, organising secretary Abdus Sattar was campaigning for Gazi.

UP chairman Nurul Islam claimed that Rafiqul along with his cohorts attacked them and troched vehicles, when they were preparing to distribute warm clothes among the cold-hit people in the afternoon in front of the union parishad premises.

"They torched my private car and vandalised my office. As my supporters tried to resist them, they also beat them. The attackers left the place after exploding crude bombs," he said.

Meanwhile, the accused Rafiqul could not be reached for his comments.

Denying the allegation Jubo League leader Rana said, "Our supporters didn't torch the vehicles. I heard UP chairman Nurul's men attacked our office. When I reached the spot, I saw vehicles burning. After the policemen reached there, I left the place."

Additional Superintendent of police in Narayanganj Abir Hossain confirmed the information, adding that being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

"Legal action will be taken in this regard," added the police official.
