BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has alleged that people in Bangladesh cannot talk now, because they have become afraid of the misrule of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.
"People now whisper, they talk with gestures in their eyes. The repression and torture of Sheikh Hasina-led government have surpassed all the previous autocratic regimes," he said.
He made the remarks while addressing a press conference virtually on Tuesday (January 2) afternoon.
Rizvi said: "When we go to distribute leaflets among people, many of them shake hands with us. We understand from the gestures in their eyes that they support our programmes. It can easily be understood that they live in panic. Even, taking a leaflet in hands, a service holder told us that he would not read in openly, rather he would read it at home."
"People can't lead their normal life due to the misrule of the government which has been intensified for widespread repression and torture. Those who speak truth, they will face dreadful criminal cases. When there was colonial rule in this country, politicians were sued, but they were shown respect. The colonial rulers were not so brutal at that time. Awami League's repression and torture have surpassed all the records of the past autocrats. Even their rule has surpassed the barbaric rule of the Middle Age," Rizvi said.
Urging the party leaders and workers to take the leaflets to the doorstep of every house, he requested them to reach it at the hands of everyone, "because people have support for this programme."
