Eight detained on different charges in three districts

Eight people have been detained on different charges in separate drives in three districts- Khulna, Lakshmipur and Khagrachhari, in three days.

BATIAGHATA, KHULNA: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three members of Ansar al-Islam, the banned terrorist organization, from Batiaghata Upazila in the district early Friday.

The arrested persons are: Elyas Das Abdullah alias Huzaifa Usama, 27, hails from Thakurgaon; Sabbirul Islam Sabbir alias Abu Sabbir Al Bangali, 20, hails from Pabna; and Shamim Laskar, 19, hails from Gopalganj District.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from the elite force and its detective branch conducted a drive in Sachibunia railway crossing area at around 1:30 am, and arrested the trio while a gang of the organization was holding a secret meeting, said Tarek Aman Banna, spokesperson of RAB-6.

At that time, some three or four unidentified people managed to flee the scene.

He said different types of books on extremism, leaflets, and mobile phone sets were seized from their possessions.
Legal steps against them are under process in this regard, the RAB official added.

LAKSHMIPUR: Four BNP leaders were arrested while distributing anti-election leaflets in Ramganj Upazila of the district on Thursday.

Police, however, claimed that the arrestees were accused in explosive and political violence cases.

The arrestees are: Advocate Tofazzal Hossain Bachchu, the district unit BNPs member secretary; Ashraf Patwari, joint convener; Zahir Raihan Babu, convener of Ramganj Upazila Chhatra Dal, and Chhatra Dal leader Md Mamun.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramganj Police Station (PS) Mohammad Saliman said that the arrestees are accused in explosives and political violence cases.  

They were shown arrested in these cases and will be produced before the court, the OC added.

Meanwhile, Acting Convener of Lakshmipur District Unit BNP Advocate Hasibur Rahman said they were conducting peaceful anti-election leaflet distribution programme but the police arrested four of their leaders to implement the governments agenda.

Denying the police allegation, Hasibur said the arrested BNP leaders are not named in those cases that police had mentioned.

KHAGRACHHARI: Police have arrested the prime accused in connection with a murder of a suspected criminal, who was gunned down on October 17, from the district.

The arrested person is Picchi Monir.

A team of Detective Branch (DB) of Police of Lalbagh Zone in the capital arrested Monir from the district on Wednesday, said Deputy Police Commissioner of Lalbagh DB Police Mashiur Rahman.

Following interrogation, police also seized a pistol and two bullets used in the murder from Kamrangirchar area in the capital.

On November 9, police arrested four people in connection with the murder.

On October 17, Ramjan Ali alias Petkata Ramjan, an alleged criminal was gunned down by unknown assailants in front of his Kamrangirchar residence in the capital.

Ramjan had an enmity with Picchi Monir over sharing of money earned from selling stolen valuables and drugs, the deputy police commissioner added.
