The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) on Saturday fined five shops in Chattogram Tk 1 lakh for selling onions at higher prices.
The directorate conducted separate raids in Choumuhani and Khatunganj areas of Chattogram city in the afternoon and imposed the fine.
During the raids, the team from the DNCRP fined Faruk Store Tk 30,000, Alif Traders Tk 20,000, Barkat Bhandar Tk 20,000, AH Traders Tk 10,000, and AK Traders Tk 20,000.
Mohammad Foiz Ullah, deputy director of the DNCRP's Chattogram office, led the team while assistant directors Nasrin Akter and Rana Debnath were present during the raids.
The prices of different types of onions have rapidly been rising after India on Friday imposed a ban on exporting onions until March next year.
