Shahriar Alam showcaused for violating electoral code of conduct

Awami League nominated MP candidate from Rajshahi-6 constituency and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam has been showcaused on charges of assaulting physically the workers and supporters of an Independent candidate, holding public meeting before the allocation of poll symbols and hurling abusive language at a former Chhatra League leader.

The Election Investigation Committee of the 12th general election sent a letter to Shahriar Alam on Thursday seeking explanation for his violation of the election code of conduct.

Besides, he was asked to submit his reply appearing before the Election Investigation Committee in person.

The showcause notice sent by the Election Investigation Committee mentioned that Shahriar Alam MP held a public meeting at Farhad Alauddin Government Primary School ground in Charghat at night on Saturday (December 2) last before the allocation of the election symbols violating the electoral code of conduct.

At the public meeting, Shahriar Alam termed Merajul Islam, worker and supporter of Rajshahi District Chhatra League's former general secretary, Independent candidate from Rajshahi-6 constituency and former AwamI League leader Rahenul Huq as 'bastard' and made various provocative remarks.

Besides, Alam threatened to kill him after December 17.

Through his behaviour, Shahriar Alam violated the electoral code of conduct.

In such a situation, Shahriar Alam has been asked to explain why steps against him would not be recommended at the Election Commission (EC) appearing before the EC in person or through his representative at 10:30am on December 10 next.
