President, PM mourn

Ex-air chief Bir Uttam Sultan Mahmud passes away

Former Chief of Air Staff Bir Uttam Air Vice Marshal (retd.) Sultan Mahmud passed away at United Hospital in the capital on Monday night. He was 79.

He breathed his last around 8:40pm at the hospital.

The former air chief left behind wife, a daughter, a son and a host of well-wisher to mourn his death.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Sultan Mahmud.

In a condolence message, the Head of the State prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of this brave freedom fighter and conveyed his deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.

In another condolence message, the premier said that Sultan Mahmud played an important role as the commanding officer of Sector-II at first and later in Sector-I during the Great War of Liberation in 1971.
