
Election Commission banned motorcycle movement for 72 hours from May 23 at midnight ahead of the Gazipur City Corporation polls (GCC), scheduled for May 25.
Assistant Secretary of Road Transport and Highway Division Md Jasim Uddin on Sunday issued the circular according to the instruction of EC. The local administration will implement the order.
According to the Road Transport Act 2018 (32), the ban on the movement of all heavy vehicles, including pickup vans, cars and trucks, will be applicable ahead of the Gazipur election from May 24 midnight to May 25 midnight, it said.
Besides, the movement of motorcycles will remain suspended from midnight on May 23 to May 26 midnight.
According to the notification, vehicles involved carrying candidate and their agents, foreign observers are exempted from the imposed restrictions.
Meanwhile, the Gazipur City Corporation election will be held through electronic voting machines (EVMs) on May 25.
Assistant Returning Officer and District Election Officer AHM Kamrul Hasan said there will be 478 centres with 3,491 permanent and 486 temporary polling stations for the vote in 57 general wards and 19 reserved wards.
In this election, 478 presiding officers, 3,491 assistant presiding officers and 6,982 polling officers will be appointed, he added.
