Case filed 48 years after killing of Col Nazmul Huda, court orders probe

A case has been filed over the killing of three freedom-fighter army officials, including sector commander Major General Khaled Mosharraf during a coup about 48 years ago.

Nahid Izhar Khan, an Awami League MP, who is the daughter of Colonel Khandker Nazmul Huda Bir Bikram, filed the case seeking justice with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Wednesday (10 May) night.

In the case, the plaintiff alleged that three army officials -- Major General Khaled Mosharraf, Colonel Nazmul Huda and Lt Col ATM Haider were killed at the directives of the then army chief Ziaur Rahman and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) leader Colonel Abu Taher Bir Bikram.

In her case, Nahid Izhar Khan stated that some 20-25misguided and indisciplined members of Bangladesh Army killed Colonel Khondker Nazmul Huda while they were on duty in the Jatiya Sangsad premises on November 7, 1975. He was the commander of 72 Brigade of Army at that time.

Two other sector commanders of the War of Liberation -- Major General Khaled Mosharraf Bir Uttam and Lt Col ATM Haider Bir Uttam -- were also killed at that time.

Major Abdul Jalil of 10 East Bengal Regiment, who was involved in the killings at the directives of the then army chief General Ziaur Rahman and JSD leader Lt Col Abu Taher, remains alive. And, he has been made an accused, the case statement said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Tejgaon Division's deputy commissioner Azimul Huque said the case was filed at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Wednesday night. Police are investigating the case.
