Operation Sunderbans: compact, classy and pulsating!

Normally, movies that feature action of a special uniformed unit have one major flaw: the plot becomes peripheral while the action takes precedence. Of course, every now and then, we love to just vegetate at home and watch all hell break lose on screen but no matter how perfect the actions scenes are, without a plot, a movie cannot hold attention.

The best thing about Operation Sunderbans is that it has a plot and better still, twists till the end and that make the action secondary.

Yippee! A film, which you can watch and then, react with a big 'what!'

Operation Sunderbans is by far the best action flick to come out of Bangladesh so far! Does that sound like an exaggeration? Well, then better go and watch it!

I did not say, it's free of flaws. A little attention to certain issues could have made it even better. But let's come to that later.
Here's what you get:

Pirates of the Sunderbans: You've seen pirates of the 16th century; get ready to meet buccaneers in a new age - just as ruthless and avaricious! These roam the dense forest areas of the Sunderbans, using the countless canals to launch sudden attacks on fishing boats.

This is not fiction! Pirates had been a major menace for fishermen until a few years ago. So, the premise is genuine.

The plot revolves round the effort of Rapid Action Battalion to nab the pirate king pin and unearth the head honcho. But the forest is their domain and unless the RAB learn how to blend into the jungle, they cannot entrap the bandits.

However, it appears that the pirates are controlled by people who live as legitimate businessmen in society.

They pull the strings from behind the curtain. Yes, just like all other nefarious rackets.

The anonymity of the bosses makes it hard to cut off the head.

Actually, I could guess it from the beginning but even then, enjoyed the revelation in the end.
To make matters difficult for the RAB, there are informers all around who work for the pirates thus thwarting the attempts by the law enforcers.

The dash of romance for cinematic value: If Hollywood had made this movie, they would have discarded the unnecessary romantic schlock but since this is Bangladesh, love is mandatory. Hence we have Nusrat Faria and Indian actress Darshana Banik.

Banik, in several shots, looked rather like Tanjin Tisha. Anyway, there's nothing much to say about their performance. Nusrat Faria plays the role of a researcher collecting information about tigers but instead of wearing clothes that befit her profession and the jungle terrain is seen moving about like a ramp model in high boots and full make up. This is the biggest flaw of the film.

Even after her encounter with pirates in which her equipment is stolen, the lipstick plus the clothes remain impeccable.

Objectively speaking, the character of the sex worker, played by Tuya Chakraborty, was far more appealing.

Proper guns and realistic action: At last a film that uses the right weapons and ammunition. Reportedly, RAB provided all the logistical support with weapons, helicopters, boats, cars and men. This adds piquancy to the film's thrill factor.

All movies have social impact - some lasting a few days others for years. This production will inspire a lot of young men to join RAB. The two leading actors, Siam Ahmed and Ziaul Roshan did their homework before playing the roles of RAB officers and they pulled off the job admirably. Reaz, the veteran actor portrayed the senior officer with oomph.

The Asad attraction: The movie features one of the most revered actors of the country, Raisul Islam Asad. He plays the role of a successful businessman. What he does to show that he still has it is something you need to find for yourself. He certainly adds to the suspense.

My favourite is Taskeen Rahman, who also acted in Dhaka Attack. This guy oozes talent and in the right hands can show what he is capable of. In Operation Sunderbans he shows competence but this is not his best yet. He can do a lot more only when someone realises his potential.

The verdict: A movie that will treat you till the end! Brilliant cinematography, plausible action scenes topped with delicious twists make Operation Sunderbans a movie to watch with family and friends. By the way, the declared budget of the film is Tk. 4.5 crore while reportedly, Ananta Jalil spent TK. 100 crore for his film The Day. I am not a film maker but feel that some fabrications are so ridiculous that even regular marijuana smokers won't be able to accept them.

A thoroughly enjoyable action film with aplot, Operation Sunderbans is a testament to the talent of a new breed of young film makers who have learnt the craft.

Should you watch it? Just head for the cinemaan entertaining evening is guaranteed!
Pradosh Mitra is a film buff!
