The High Court has issued a rule against the government asking why suspension of Mohammad Jahangir Alam from the post of Gazipur City Corporation mayor would not be declared unlawful.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Aktaruzzaman issued the rule on Tuesday (August 23).

The government has been asked to reply to the rule within two weeks.

Earlier, Mohammad Jahangir Alam submitted a writ to the High Court to get back his mayoral post. It was confirmed by deputy attorney general Barrister Md Nawroj Russel Chowdhury and assistant attorney general Md Golam Sarwar Payel.

The High Court's hearing on the writ was scheduled for Tuesday.

In September last year, videos of Jahangir making some derogatory comments on Bangabandhu and some martyred freedom fighters at a program went viral on social media.

Later, on November 19, the ruling Awami League expelled him over the comments.

On Tuesday, another High Court bench granted Mohammad Jahangir Alamanticipatory bail in seven cases filed against him over making derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu and Liberation War.
