The High Court (HC) on Monday granted anticipatory bail to the family members of Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore in a case of extortion and snatching.
An HC bench comprising Justice M Moazzam Husain and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman passed the order as 10 accused in the case appeared before the bench with bail plea.
The family members of Justice Gobinda were shown accused in the criminal case when they were supposed to get security as per an HC order.
The Daily Observer on Sunday published an investigative report about the occurrence under the headline "High Court being ignored." The court took the news report in consideration and granted them bail.
The case was filed at Rajoir Police Station in Madaripur just after three days of an HC rule directing the authorities. HC Judge and his protocol police were present near the crime scene as narrated in the case was false, locals said.
Ten persons, almost all of whom are members of the family of Justice Gobinda, allegedly had beaten three persons -Biplab Roy, Khokon Bhakta and Mrinal Biswas- in a market place in broad daylight and snatched Tk 22,000 along with some gold ornaments from them. Nobody could confirm of happening any such incident, though it was a crowded place.
An HC bench comprising Justice Quazi Rezaul Hoque and Justice JN Deb Chowdhury earlier issued contempt rule and order for the protection of the judge's family. The case was filed after three days of the HC rule.
Litigant Biplab and his associate Mrinal were also respondents to the HC rule, as they organised a contemptuous agitation against HC Judge Gobinda Tagore on September 4.
Advocate SM Rezaul Karim, the counsel for the bail petitioners, told the court that the litigant, backed by a political leader holding powerful post of the government, filed the false case just to harass his clients. Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Roy represented the state during hearing.
