Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has shut down 59 unregistered and unauthorised internet protocol televisions (IPTVs).

The BTRC stated it in a press release on Sunday (Sept 19).

The press release says that Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is the process of broadcasting contents through satellite television using the Internet Protocol Network. The BTRC only allows the licensed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to provide IP-based data services, such as, streaming services, IP TV and video on demand.

According to the press release, some traders have been operating IPTVs through Facebook or Youtube illegally buying domains.

Only the ISPs approved by the BTRC are able to broadcast satellite TV channels through internet after approval from the Ministry of Information.
