Col Shahid, wife jailed under Special Powers Act case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced Col (retd) Shahid Uddin Khan and his wife Farhana Anjum Khan to 10 year imprisonment in a case filed under the Special Powers Act.

Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sayeda Hafsa Jhuma pronounced the verdict.

The convicts are also fined Tk 50,000. In default, they have to suffer additional six months in jail.

Another two accused--Khorshed Alam Patwari and Sayed Azizul Ali--acquitted from the case as the allegation brought against them has not been proved.

The court issued an arrest warrant against Shahid Uddin Chowdhury and his wife Farhana as they are fugitive.

According to the prosecution, it was alleged that a team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on January 17, 2019, raided the residence of the couple in Baridhara DOHS and seized two pistols with 11 rounds of bullets, a shotgun, several magazines and three bundles of fake notes of Tk 1,000 each from there.

Later, Biplob Kumar Shil, an inspector of CTTC, filed the case under the Special Power Act against five people including the couple with Cantonment Police Station for keeping fake notes.

Accused Johurul Haque Khandaker died during the trial proceedings of the case is going on.

On November 10 last year, another court in Dhaka sentenced four people, including Shahid Uddin, to life term imprisonment in an arms case.

Later on December 20, Col  Shahid Uddin was given nine years' of jail term in a tax evasion case.
