Bangladesh Bank's former Governor Khorshed Alam dies

Bangladesh Bank's former Governor Khorshed Alam has passed away. He died of old age complications at United Hospital in Dhaka at about 10:00am on Wednesday (July 28). He was 86.

It was stated in a press release sent by Bangladesh Bank.

Khorshed Alam did MA in Economics from Dhaka University, MA in Public Administration from Harvard University and MA in Economics from Tufts University, Boston, USA.

He served as the fifth Governor of Bangladesh Bank from December 20, 1992 to November 21, 1996.

Khorshed Alam was a language veteran. He established Bangladesh Association in New England in the United States in 1971 and worked for the War of Liberation from there.

He started his professional career joining the then Pakistan Civil Service in 1957. Apart from serving as deputy commissioner in Chittagongm Mymensingh and Pabna districts, he worked as Information, Local Government, Communications, Industries, Commerce and Finance Secretaries. He also served as Bangladesh Ambassador in Turkey. Before joining the Bangladesh Bank as Governor, he served as Finance Secretary.

Khorshed Alam was born on January 15, 1935 at Ramnagar in Narsingdi district. He was first Governor who formed monetary policy committee in Bangladesh Bank and supervised it.

Present Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir has expressed profound shock at the death of Khorshed Alam. Fazle Kabir said Khorshed Alam had played a unique role in Bangladesh as the head of financial sector. All the bank family including Bangladesh Bank express profound shock at his death, he also said.
