MEHERPUR, Sept 1: Due to lack of drainage facilities, most of the roads at Jorpukuria village under Gangni upazila of the district have gone under water following heavy rainfall some days back. As the roads have not been repaired for the last couple of years, thousands of people of the village have been facing untold sufferings.
Jorpukuria village is located some six kilometres away from Gangni upazila town and beside the Meherpur-Kushtia highway. A metal road has connected Vomordah village with Jorpukuria via the main road. Some parts of the road are Herringbone Brick Bond (HBB), and the remaining portion is carpeted.
Water-logging has been a regular phenomenon on the roads here during each rainy season. In order to drain out the water from the roads, construction of some culverts is necessary, but the authority has not done it yet.
Though there has been no remarkable rainfall this season, heavy rainfall a few days ago added to the previous water-logging situation that increased the sufferings of the pedestrians. They are compelled to walk through the knee-deep water.
Abdur Rashid, a grocer of Jorpukur Bazaar, said that there are three secondary schools, one government primary school and a college in the village. The students along with the commoners are facing untold sufferings to go to and coming from the educational institutions. The women and children including the elderly people are the worst-sufferers.
He also said that the rain water could not drain out to the nearby Chewtia River as many ponds have been excavated in unplanned way. As a result, standing crops in the fields have also been submerged.
Aktaruzzaman of the same village said, the village is known as fish village and the fish cultivators and traders have been compelled to carry fish and fries on their heads instead on vehicles. As a result, they are paying more time and money.
Two college-going students - Mousumi and Rehana said, in some places the condition of the road is beyond description.
UP Member Shahabuddin said, he informed the matter to the competent authority but there was no response. He demanded immediate repair of the road.
Engineer of Local Government Engineering Department in Gangni upazila Robiul Islam gave assurance to repair the road very soon.
