Mother, son become first ever BGMEA directors

Incumbent president Rubana Huq and her son Navidul Huq have elected as directors in the biennial election of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) held on Sunday.

As a result, mother and son will work together as directors in the next board of the trade body. This is the first such incident in the history of BGMEA.  

Rubana Huq and her son were elected on behalf of Forum panel led by ABM Shamsuddin.  

In 2019, Rubana, Managing Director of Mohammadi Group and wife of late Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq was elected BGMEA President. She was the first female president of BGMEA.

Faruque Hasan is going to be elected President of BGMEA as majority of his panel Sammilito Parishad won in the election.

The elected Directors will elect President on April 16 and the new committee will take over on April 20.

Shammilita Parishad secured 24 posts of directors while the other panel, Forum won 11 posts in the election.

In Dhaka zone, Shammilita got 17 posts, out of 26, and Forum bagged 9, according to the results. In Chattogram zone, Shammilita Parishad bagged 7 out of 9 posts while Forum got 2 posts of directors.

Based in capital Dhaka, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is the apex trade body of Bangladesh’s garments manufacturers. Founded in 1983, the BGMEA plays a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s apparel sector as the country’s economic growth largely depends on garment exports.

The new BGMEA board will take over on April 20.
