Water submerges 168 edn institutions in Jessore

JESSORE, Aug 23: Academic activities at 168 educational institutions in Monirampur, Keshabpur and Abhaynagar upazilas of the district are getting hampered as water has submerged the institutions following torrential rain in the last few days. But, the institutions have not been closed yet, and classes are somehow being taken.
Meanwhile, the guardians are showing apathy to send their children to their respective institutions; so the students' attendance is less than the usual times, teachers informed. Still they have not closed the institutions yet, considering the JSC and SSC examinees, they informed.
Education office sources said, of the 168 educational institutions in the three upazilas, 29 primary and 44 secondary schools and madrasas at Monirampur, 57 primary and 16 schools and colleges at Keshabpur, and 14 primary and eight secondary educational institutions at Abhaynagar upazila have been inundated. The district education office has sent a list of affected educational institutions to district administration, education department and education ministry, office sources informed.
Assistant Teacher of Singari Government Primary School at Abhaynagar upazila SM Farid Uddin Ahmed said, students cannot attend classes regularly as the premises and the building of Buikar Government Primary School at his village have been inundated.
Headmaster at Habaspole Government Primary School in Keshabpur upazila Kartik Chandra Saha said, "Since the school has been submerged, the guardians are not interested to send their children to the school. As a result, academic activities are getting hampered. But still we are taking preparation classes for PSC exam regularly."
Assistant Teacher at Mulgram Government Primary School in Keshabpur Tapos Roy said, 5/7 families of inundated areas have taken shelter at the school; so the academic activities are getting hampered.
Secondary Education Officer in Monirampur upazila Akram Hossen Khan said, after meetings of managing committees at different educational institutions, classes have been suspended where water has entered the classrooms. The classes would be restarted after the water drains out, he added.
District Primary Education Officer Tapos Kumar Odhikary said, though academic activities have remained off at some institutions, administrative works have been kept running. But, no school has been closed due to the water-logging, he informed.
A list containing details of damages at different institutions has been submitted to the education department, he further informed.
District Education Officer Aminul Islam Tuku said, "No institution has been closed officially. But, water-logging situation is hampering normal activities." He informed that a list with details of the damages has been sent to concerned department.
