PAIKGACHHA, KHULNA, Aug 10: After breaching Chakribokri Boddha Jalmahal (water body) embankment, tidal water has inundated three villages at Deluti Union No. 4 of Paikgachha Upazila.
The flood water also submerged vast areas with Aman seedbeds, croplands and fish enclosures.
Local people including the union chairman tried to protect the deluged localities from further destruction by repairing the embankment.
The embankment was built by the WAPDA at the island-surrounded Deluti Union covering the upazila's Gewabunia and Kalinagar areas along the Shibsa River. Earlier, the  embankment was damaged by Cyclone Amphan.
But before overcoming the Amphan-ravaged damages, the tidal water hit Gewabunia, Parmodhukhali and Chakribkori and submerged vast areas on August 5.
Greater damages happened to Aman seedbeds, fish enclosures and croplands. Houses got destroyed and hundreds of families became marooned.
Union Chairman Ripon Kumar Mandal said, one Anam was cultivating fish in this 37-acre Jalmahal. He said for not repairing two damaged points along North and South sides of the canal, the Chakribokri embankment turned risky; as a result, it got broken at the pressure of the tidal water that inundated three villages.
On Friday, on the volunteer-basis, the chairman organised local people to repair the embankment. He said despite the repairing,  the embankment is still under threat.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer ABM Khalid Hossain Siddiqui said, the lease contract of the Jalmahal has been cancelled; the land surveyor has been sent for giving report on the eroded and flooded areas.
He gave assurance that a sustainable embankment will be built.
