Flood situation worsens in Shariatpur

The flood situations in Shariatpur district has worsened due to rise in water levels in the river Padma.

The main road in Shariatpur district--Shariatpur-Mawa road--is now under water at various points which disrupts movement of motor vehicles.

The water at Sureswar point in the river Padma is flowing 10cm above danger level.

About 200 villages in 50 unions under Sadar, Naria, Janjira and Bhedarganj upazilas, surrounded by the rivers Padma and Meghna, have been flooded.

Some 4,00,00 people of four upazilas including Shariatpur Sadar have become marooned due to the floods caused by the onrush of water from the rivers Padma and Meghna.

A large number of flood affected people have taken shelter on high grounds, dams and at local educational institutions.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) officials at Mawa Ghat said the ferry service at Kaorakandi Ghat and Majirghat on Shariatpur-Dhaka highway, and Narshingpur ferry ghat were disrupted due to the inundation of ghat pontoons, strong current and rise in the water levels in the mighty river Padma.

Meanwhile, Iqbal Hossain Apu, MP of Shariatpur-1 constituency, distributed 100 metric tons of reliefs goods including rice, pulse, oil and dry food among 22,000 families at Shariatpur Sadar and Janjira upazilas, and another 100 metric tons of food are ready to distribute among the marooned people.

Besides, 298 shelter centres have been kept readied for the flood affected people, district administration sources said.
