The number of deaths from a clash between BGB members and villagers in Matiranga of Khagrachhari on Tuesday over cutting trees rose to six, including four of a family and a BGB man.
Those who died in the clash were identified as 40 BGB sepoy Shaon,30, Sahab Mia alias Musa,70, of Alutila Battali village, his sons M Ahmed Ali, 25, and Ali Akbar,30, and Mofiz Mia.
Meanwhile, Sahab Mia's wife Ranju Begum died of cardiac arrest hearing the deaths of her husband and sons.
Police an local sources said Sahab Mia cut down a number of trees of his garden at Gazinagar this morning.
When the timbers were being taken to a brick field, BGB members claimed the timbers illegal and tried to seize these.
At one stage, locals gathered at the scene and intercepted the BGB men that led to a clash.
Police, however, detained two persons in this connection, said Shamsuddin Bhuiyan, OC of Matiranga Police Station.
Matiranga UNO Bibhishon Kanti Das told media that two bodies including of the BGB man were kept at the upazila health complex.
Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner Protap Chandra Biswas and Police Superintendent M Abdul Aziz visited the spot.
The Police super said the situation is normal now.
BGB’s clarification over Khagrachhari incidentBorder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has issued a statement clarifying the incident of a clash between the paramilitary force and the villagers claiming at least six lives at Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhar.
“Civilians surrounded a BGB’s patrol team near Gazinagar Bazar at Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhari district while the team took measures against timber smuggling, creating violent situation,” said the BGB statement on Tuesday evening.
As a consequence of provocative situation, one round blank firing by BGB and scuffling between the BGB members and civilians, the villagers took away the firearms of the paramilitary force and shoot randomly, it read.
Five people including one BGB member–soldier Md Shaon– were killed in the incident, the statement said, adding that BGB Guimara Sector Commander, Bangladesh Army Guimara Region Commander and Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) of Khagrachhari district visited the spot and started activities to conduct separate inquiry into the incident.
Necessary measures will be taken after the investigation, it said.
