Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Military Secretary Maj Gen Mia Mohammad Zainul Abedin, Bir Bikram, passed away at a hospital in Singapore on Tuesday. He was 59.
He breathed his last at Mount Elizabeth Hospital at 5:15pm (local time), Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press release on Tuesday evening.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed profound shock at the death of Maj Gen Zainul Abedin.
The decorated freedom fighter, who was adorned with the Bir Bikram title, had been undergoing treatment for long. Having joined the army in 1978, he had been working as the military secretary to the Prime Minister since November of 2011.
His body will be brought back home on Wednesday, said Biplab Barua, special assistant to the Prime Minister.
In a condolence message, the Prime Minister said Zainul Abedin discharged his duties with honesty and sincerity.
He served at different important positions of the State efficiently and his patriotism and dutifulness will keep him alive in our memory, the Prime Minister said.
