
The
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested 13 government officials for
their alleged involvement in purchasing household items for Rooppur
Nuclear Power Plant's (RNPP) housing project.
The arrestees include former Pabna Public Works Department executive engineer Masudul Alam.
A team of anti-graft body arrested the accused on Thursday.
ACC Chairman Iqbal Mahmood disclosed the information at a press briefing at its Segunbagicha Headquarters in Dhaka.
The
other arrestees are Pabna Public Housing Division Deputy Assistant
Engineer Md Jahidul Kabir, Deputy Divisional Engineers Md Shafiqul
Islam, Ahmed Sazzad Khan, Mostafa Kamal, Estimator and Deputy Assistant
Engineer Shumon Kumar Nandi, Assistant Engineers Md Tareque, Aminul
Islam, Abu Syed, Rowshan Ali, Tahajjud Hossain, Majid and Sons owner
Asif Hossain and Sazin Construction Limited owner Md Shahadat Hossain.
According
to reports published in a daily the purchase prices of various items to
furnish the project's 966 flats for the Russian engineers and others
were abnormally higher than the market prices.
According to reports,
each pillow was shown to have cost Tk 5,957 and Tk 760 was shown as
the lifting charge for each pillow while an electric stove was shown to
have been bought for Tk 7,747 with an additional lifting charge of Tk
6,650.
The purchase price of an electric kettle was reportedly Tk 5,313 while its lifting cost was Tk 2,945.
Similarly, a room-cleaning machine purchased at Tk 12,018 was lifted spending Tk 6,650.
