The singer's 88th birth anniversary today

Every artiste is identified by his tonal quality and potentiality of his work. Only the radiant 'golden glow' can match that of Alim's admirable vocal range and tone. He displayed unparalleled talent in songs such as Premer Mora Jole Dobe Na, Holudia Pakhi, Amare Shajay Dio Nowshar Shajey, Porer Jayga Porer Jomi, Mone Boro Asha Chhilo Jabo Modinay, Sharbonasha Padma Nadirey, Babu Selam Bare Bar, Shab Shakhire Par Korite, Ujan Ganger Naiya and many more.
Today marks the 88th birth anniversary of legendary folk singer Abdul Alim. On the occasion, different socio-cultural organisations chalked out elaborate programmes. Members of Abdul Alim Foundation placed garland at the grave of the singer.
Abdul Alim was born on July 27, 1931 in the village of Talibpur in Murshidabad district. While at school he heard a gramophone record and became attracted to music. He took music lessons from a local instructor Syed Golam Ali and earned a reputation as singer. Later he went to Kolkata and became acquainted with Abbasuddin Ahmed and Kazi Nazrul Islam.
He took lessons in folk music as well as classical music from Bedaruddin Ahmad, Ustad Mohammad Hossain Khasru, Momtaz Ali Khan, Abdul Latif, Kanailal Shil, Abdul Halim Chowdhury and many more. He recorded his first two songs 'Tor Mostafake De Na Mago' and 'Aftab Ai Baslo Pate' for a gramophone company in 1943. After partition Abdul Alim settled in Dhaka where he became a radio artiste. He plays back ground score in the first film of Bangladesh named Mukh O Mukhosh. He died on September 5 in 1977.
