
TANGAIL, July 23: Due to flood, 164 educational institutions in Bhuapur and Nagarpur upazilas of the districts have been closed.
In Bhuapur Upazila, 72 educational institutions have been closed, and shelter centres have been opened at 16 institutions.
Of the educational institutions, 52 are government primary schools, 14 secondary schools and six Dakhil madrasas. Almost all the institutions of Gabsara and Arjuna unions went under water.
While visiting the flood-hit schools, it was found that most of those went under water. Some classrooms and offices are under knee-to-waist deep water. The flood water has damaged furniture of the schools. People are catching fish from playgrounds.
As the schools are closed, the study of PSC, JSC and JDC candidates is being hampered.
Meanwhile, 10 government school and six secondary schools have been turned into shelter centres to accommodate the flood-hit people.
Principal of Chhota Joypur Government School Fazlul Haque said, "The whole school went under water. We could hardly take out the papers but other things are still under water. It is impossible to tell when we can go to school again."
Head teacher of Gobindashi High School Mohammad Ali said, "The school has been closed sine die due to the flood. Though last Saturday was the date for publishing half-yearly exam result, we could not publish it. When the water level will decrease, the result will be published and the school will be opened."
Upazila Education Officer Shahnewaz Pervin said, 52 schools of Bhuapur have been closed for flood. All the teachers have been asked to help the flood-hit people.
Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md Shahinur Islam said, many flood-hit people have taken shelter in the centres.
On the other hand, at least 92 educational institutions have been closed for flood in Nagarpur Upazila of the district till Sunday last.
The academic activities of 45,000 students of 10 high schools, 76 government primary schools, two colleges and four madrasas have remained stopped.
Some of the institutions have been turned into shelters.
In the meantime, the Jamuna River has eroded Paiksha Paschim Government Primary School, and some other institutions are also under erosion threat.
The guardians are confused in sending their kids to the institutions, as they did not receive any official notice of discontinuation yet. Even students are disinterested to go to the schools which have not been flooded yet.
Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md Moniruzzaman confirmed that 16 educational institutes, including 10 high schools, four madrasas and two colleges have already been eroded by Jamuna.
He hoped that the institutions will be opened after flood water recedes.
Upazila Primary Education Officer Selima Akhter said there are 153 government primary schools in the upazila. Of those, one has been completely eroded, 76 were flooded, and the rest are under threat of flooding.
She said the teachers have been instructed to continue taking classes at the schools that were not flooded yet.
