The palace of Natubabu in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal, used as a shelter of freedom fighters in 1971, is on the verge of ruination and needs immediate preservation.
Successors of late landlord (Zamidar) Shree Kumud Bandhu Roy Chowdhury are the owner of the house at Shyampur village of the upazila.
Acknowledging the fact, freedom fighter Khan Altaf Hossain Vulu, former VP of BM College and district BCL leader said the lodge was an operational headquarters during the Liberation War and also a camp of 300–400 freedom fighters of the area.
He said Nantubabu and his family managed to flee the area when Pak occupation army operated in the area with the collaboration of anti-liberation-forces on November 16 of 1971.
After the Liberation War, Natababu returned home. But anti-liberation forces, to refrain Natubabu from giving witness against the war criminals, attacked and injured him on September 28, 1973. He succumbed to his injuries on October 10, 1973.
Later, his family met with Bangabandhu who assured of preserving the property of Natubabu and take action against the anti-liberation forces and land grabbers.
“Our father was mercilessly killed by the enemies of our glorious Liberation War and now they are once again threatening to our family members to grab our property,” said Natabau’s son Biplob Banhi Roy Chowdhury and latter’s wife Baishali Roy Chowdhury who came from abroad for visit.
Now only Chhaya Rani Roy Cowdhury, widow of Natubabu, is living in their house at Shyampur under severe threats of land grabbers. Two sons and three daughters of Natubabu are now living abroad.
“We already donated our huge properties to local educational institution, bazaar, road construction for easy communication and connectivity. Now about seven acres of land properties with our historical residential structures still remains.”
“As most of our family members are now living in other countries, we want to donate our properties to serve the nation and region by creating a trustee board,” they said.
Ajiar Rahman, deputy commissioner of Barishal, recently visited the historic spot related with Liberation War. He said if the family members wanted to donate their properties under a trustee deed, then administration also will help them.
