NOAKHALI, Feb 9: The candidates backed by Awami League for the upcoming upazila polls are busy lobbying to get nomination for the chairman positions.
Elections will be held at nine upazilas of the district.
Emon Bhatta, convener of district Juba League, Shihab Uddin Shahin, current chairman of Sadar Upazila, and Samsuddin Jehan, AL joint general secretary of the district will be contesting for the Sadar Upazila.
On the other hand, AL lone candidates are contesting for chairman post from Subarnachar and Comapyganj upazilas.
Prof Anam Khairul Alam Selim, current chairman of Subarnachar Upazila and Md Shahab Uddin, vice-president of district AL are selected by the district AL. The list was sent for finalisation by central AL party office.
Besides, AL of Senbagh, Chatkhil, Sonaimuri, Begumganj, Kabirganj and Hatia upazilas selected more than three candidates, and they have sent the list to the party office for finalisation, said sources at the local party office.
Candidates at Senbagh Upazila included Ataur Rahman Bhuiyan Manik, AL upazila vice-president, Showkat Hossain Kanon, AL member, and Jafor Ahmed Chowdhury, former AL president of the district.
Nominees at Chatkhil Upazila are: Jahangir Kabir, current chairman, Harun-ur-Rashid, businessman, Jakir Hossain Jahangir, general secretary of AL of the upazila.
Candidates at Sonaimuri Upazila are: Khondokar Ruhul Amin, district AL advisor, AFM Babul Babu, GS of AL of the upazila, and Muzahid Hossain Mozammel, relief and social welfare secretary of district AL.
Candidates at Begumganj Upazila are: Omar Faruk Badsha, AL organisational secretary, Aminul Haque Munna, district Juba League joint convener, Mohammad Ullah, district AL advisor, and Aktaruzzaman, advocate.
Candidates at Kabirhat Upazila are: Kamrun Nahar Sheuly, current chairman, Hazi Md. Ibrahim, former member of district AL, Jahirul Haque Raihan, GS of AL in the upazila.
Candidates at Hatia Upazila are: Mahbub Morshed Liton, current chairman, and Mohiuddin Ahmed, GS of upazila AL.
