Sabyasachi Syed Shamsul Haq’s 83rd birth anniversary

Three new books by the author to be released today

Today marks the eighty-third birth anniversary of Syed Shamsul Haq. On the occasion of this day his family members widow Anwara Syed Haq, daughter Bidita Syed Haq and son Ditio Syed Haq have arranged a memorial programme at the late writer's residence 'Manjubari' in Gulshan in the city. Three new books by the multifaceted writer also known as the Sabyasachi will be unveiled at the event. Anwara Syed Haq on behalf of the family said, "We will cherish the eternal creations by him through poetry recitation, singing and other memorial skits." The programme would start at 3.30pm.
The books to be launched today include Syed Shamsul Haq's translation of Henrik Ibsens' drama. The work has been titled "Pirchaner Pala" and has been published by Charushilpi Prakashan. The other two books are a story collection named "Galpagatha" from Chitra Prakashani and a collection of articles penned for literary columns named "Joleshwarir Dinpatri" from Aritri Prakashani. Ataur Rahman, who has directed the maximum number of dramas written by Syed Shamsul Haq will preside over the event.
Haq was born in Kurigram in 1935. In the early 1960s, he introduced unique themes and style through his poetry and novels. His poems are unpretentious and reach out to a wider readership. His style and tone are unique. His poems focus on Bengali culture and tradition, romanticism, patriotism, nature and the Liberation War. In his novels and short stories, Haq delves deep into urban and rural life as well as social, political and economic issues.
Haq married Anwara Syed Haq. She is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London. Together they have one daughter, Bidita Sadiq, and one son, Ditio Syed Haq. Bidita teaches English literature at higher school level. Ditio, an IT specialist, writes stories, lyrics and music. Haq lives alternately in Dhaka and London.
His notable works are "Ek Mahilar Chhobi", "Anupam Din", "Simana Chhariye", "Neel Dangshon", "Smritimedh", "Mrigayay Kalakshep", "Stabdhatar Anubad", "Ek Juboker Chhayapath", "Swapna Sankranta", "Brishti O Bidrohigon", "Baro Diner Shishu", "Banabala Kichu Taka Dhar Niyechhilo and more.
The poet has been honoured with the Adamjee Literary Award, Shadhinota Puroshkar, Ekushey Padak, Padabali Kobita Award, Mazharul Islam Poetry Award, Nasiruddin Gold Medal, National Poetry Award, Bangla Academy Award, Adamjee Literary Award, Alakta Gold Medal , Alaol Literary Award, Kabitalap Award, Literary Award of the Association of Women Writers, Jebunnessa-Mahbubullah Gold Medal, Padabali Kabita Award, Nasiruddin Gold Medal, National Poetry Award, National Poetry Honour and more.
