CHATTOGRAM, Nov 22: A Chattogram court on Thursday sent BNP Vice Chairman Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury to jail after rejecting his appeal for bail in a case that involves 'assassination threats' against the Prime Minister.
Jyonti Rani, Senior Judicial Magistrate of Chattogram, rejected the bail application of Gias Quader and sent him to jail.
Giasuddin Quader sought bail in four cases and was granted bail in three, said Advocate Bijon Kumar Barua, lawyer for the defendant.
"There were several
attempts to assassinate the prime minister in the past. That's why I made the appeal that a person like him should be denied bail," said Bijon.
On the death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman, Giasuddin in a discussion said the fate of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will turn out to be worse than that of her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was assassinated in 1975. A report based on the statement was published in a local newspaper.
The day after the incident, BCL Upazila Chairman Jamal Uddin filed a case with Fatikchhari Police Station. Local BNP leader Sarwar Alamgir and 50-60 others were also accused in the case. Giasuddin is the brother of Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, who was executed for crimes against humanity in 2015.
