Chief Prosecutor Syed Rezaur Rahman on Monday ended his arguments on law point in the deadly August 21 grenade attack cases.
In his conclusion arguments, the Chief Prosecutor appealed to the
court to give the highest punishment to all accused as per law.
A 12 member prosecution team took 29 days for completing the arguments in the cases, said prosecution team member Advocate Akramuddin Shyamol.
After submitting more arguments by defence lawyer SM Shahjahan, Judge Shahed Nuruddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 is expected to fix the date of judgement today.
Lawyer Rezaur also submitted two separate petitions for sending eight accused, including three inspectors general of police (IGPs), now on bail, to jail cancelling their bail.
They are former IGPs Ashraful Huda, Shahudul Haque and Khoda Baksh Chowdhury, three former Criminal Investigation Department officials -- SP Ruhul Amin, former CID ASPs Munshi Atiqur Rahman and Abdur Rashid, former Dhaka City Corporation Ward Commissioner Ariful Islam Arif and Lt Commander (retd) Saiful Islam Duke, also nephew of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
At the outset of the hearing on points of law for the fifth day on Monday, Rezaur Rahman said the accused had held meetings at 10 places in the capital before carrying out the grenade attacks.
He further said none of the accused was implicated in the cases politically. They were brought under trial on specific charges, he added.
Twenty-four leaders and activists of the AL and its associate bodies were killed and over 300 others suffered splinter injuries in the August 21 attack. Among the dead was Ivy Rahman, then Mohila AL president and also the wife of late President Zillur Rahman.
Many of the injured became crippled for life. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, then opposition leader, narrowly escaped the attack with ear injuries.
Eight of the accused, including three former IGPs, are now on bail while 18 including Tarique are absconding. Twenty-three, including Lutfozzaman Babar and Abdus Salam Pintu, are now behind bars.
Following the incident, two cases were filed against 49 people with Motijheel Police Station, one for murder and another under the Explosive Substances Act.
The trial of the cases had begun at the same tribunal in 2012. The court is conducting the trial of both the cases simultaneously.
Of the total 52 accused, 18 are yet to be arrested, eight are on bail and the rest are behind the bars. Two prime accused former Jamaat secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid has been hanged in crimes against humanity case, while Mufti Hannan and his associate Shahidul Alam Bipul have also been executed for 2004 grenade attack at Shah Jalal shrine in Sylhet and their names have been dropped from the case.
