Three days before the voting in two suspended polling stations in Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) polls, BNP mayoral candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury on Thursday submitted a list of dead voters to the Election Commission.
Ariful met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital around 12:40pm, and also submitted the list of expatriate voters who are now staying abroad.
EC sources said that Ariful Haque Chowdhury visited EC to share several kinds of irregularities in Sylhet City Corporation election.
On July 1, the Election Commission fixed the date for reelection to Gazi Burhanuddin Garam Dewan Government Primary School and Hobinandi Government Primary School centres.
There are 2,221 voters at Gazi Burhanuddin Garam Dewan Government Primary School centre while 2,566 at Hobinandi Government Primary School.
On July 30, voting took place in Sylhet City Corporation. The BNP appears to be on the verge of a victory in the Sylhet mayor race, but a revote in two cancelled polling centres means it will have to wait some time for a confirmation.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, he said, "I have been here to submit the list of dead voters so that no one can give their votes. I have also submitted the list of voters who're staying abroad and urged the Commission to take step so that these votes are not cast."
Ariful said the CEC assured him of taking necessary steps in this regard.
According to his lists, under the two suspended voting centres there are 118 dead voters while 180 expatriates are now staying abroad.
Besides, 3 voters migrated to another place leaving the area.
He said as 301 people will not be able to cast their votes, his victory is for sure.
The reelection to two polling stations, where voting was postponed during July 30 SCC polls will be held in August.
BNP mayoral candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury has taken a lead by 4,626 votes in 132 centres out of total 134 in the polls. He bagged 90,496 votes while Awami League's Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran polled 85,870.
The BNP candidate now needs only 81 votes in the reelection to the postponed centres having a total of 4,787 voters.
