Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) and the clubs usually prefer to play most of the matches of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and other events at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka. But, this time BFF will have to increase venues due to the instructions from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
In February this year, two of the AFC officials came in Dhaka and were surprised to see that BFF arranged the entire BPL in only one venue, Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Yet BFF was indicating to the unwillingness of the clubs, AFC asked the Federation to play the league in at least six venues. The football governing body in Asia does not think playing all the matches in one venue can be called a professional league.
So, BFF is strict about increasing venues this year. Earlier, a decision was taken to arrange the league in five to eight venues.
The Federation asked the clubs to choose their home venues and submit the names.
The player transfer and registration window for the season 2018-19 was opened from July 25. In the meantime, the clubs had submitted their venue choice lists. It is seen that five of the clubs wanted to pick Dhaka based venues as their home venues while others desiring Chattogram, Mymensingh, Gopalganj, Noakhali, Rajshahi and Nilphamari stadiums to make their home venues. However, none wanted Sylhet as their home venue.
Among the BPL contesters this year, the two archrivals Abahani, Mohammedan and one of the successful clubs Sheikh Jamal wanted Bangabandhu National Stadium as their home venue while Old Dhaka team Rahmatganj Muslim Friend Society and Gopibagh's Brothers Union want Bir Shrestha Shaheed Sepoy Mustafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur as their home venue.
Chittagong Abahani wants MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong, Saif Sporting Club and Arambagh Krira Sangha want Rafiq Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium in Mymensingh, Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra and Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra want Gopalganj Stadium, Nofel Sporting Club wants Noakhali Stadium, Team BJMC chooses Rajshahi and newbie team Bashundhara Kings wish to make Nilphamari their home venue.
Yet the choice of the clubs is not the ultimate matter. The final decision regarding the venues will be decided in an executive committee meeting of BFF soon.
