RAJSHAHI, June 8: Baneshwarhaat of Puthia Upazila is known as mango capital. It is the largest mango haat in the district.
The local farmers started plucking mangoes from May 20 according to the rules of the administration. The quantity of mango has increased this week.
After talking with the mango traders, it was known that 10 to 12 truckloads of mangoes are being supplied to different places of the country.
But the scenario was different on Tuesday. The trucks filled with mango occupied Dhaka-Rajshahi highway, causing traffic congestion. As a result, the road of five minutes is taking 30 to 40 minutes to cross. However, the passengers are not feeling bored rather they are enjoying the scenery of mango buying and selling.
Mango trader Sadek Ali of Baneshwarhaat said a huge quantity of mangoes has come to the market this week. At least, 50 to 55 truckloads of mangoes are coming to the market daily. There is no adequate place to keep the trucks. So the vehicles are occupying the highway.
Mango traders said the mangoes are coming from Puthia, Durgapur, Bagha, Charghat, Baghmara, Katakhali and Belpukur upazilas of the district.
In-Charge of Puthia Shibpur police outpost Mostafizur Rahman said they are trying to remove the traffic jam.
Puthia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdullah Al Mahmud said the number of mango-laden trucks has increased; so the people here are facing traffic jam.
"We took different initiatives to avert the jam. We are keeping the trucks at the cattle market of Baneshwar. From Tuesday, our team has been helping the police to accommodate the mango-laden trucks. The mobile team of traffic police is also helping them," he also said.
