Labourers gather at Tangail haats to be hired for paddy harvesting

TANGAIL, May 26: The paddy harvesting labourers gather at different haats in Mirzapur, Kalihati and Ghatail Upazilas here from different districts.
The labourers are coming to the same haats this year too. People hire the labourers for cutting paddy after
bargaining.
The labourers come to agreement with the owners of the paddy fields. The labourers return home after earning money after cutting paddy.
Farmer Rahim Miah said the labourers are taking more wages this year. So, they are doubtful about the profit.
Labourer Abdus Salam and Mohammad Rafiq Miah said, "We came to Tangail to earn money leaving our family alone."
The labourers, mostly coming from Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Panchagarh and Lalmonirhat districts, said they will celebrate Eid with their family after earning money by cutting paddy.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in the district Mohammad Abdur Razzaq said paddy threshing by 13 modern machines has started in the district with assistance of the DAE. The number of the machines will be increased in future. It will reduce the labour and production cost.
The farmers said if the use of the machines increases, they will be able to harvest paddy timely.
