Four resident students of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall of Dhaka University who were forced out of the dormitory or, in the university administration's parlance, 'handed to their guardians' on Thursday night were allowed back in the hall Friday night. "Four students who were earlier handed to the guardians were brought back Friday night," Afroza Bulbul, a house tutor of the dormitory, told the Daily Observer Friday night over phone. She would not elaborate. The university authorities' decision came in the wake of fresh student demonstrations on campus. The quota-reform agitators on Friday demanded removal of Dhaka University's Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall provost for throwing out several students from the dormitory on Thursday midnight for their involvement in the agitation; otherwise they threatened to take to the streets. Seeking anonymity, some students of the hall alleged that the authorities started threatening them from 5:30pm on Thursday and summoned eight students to the hall office and seized their mobile phones. Seeking anonymity, an employee of the hall said at least 50 of the students' local guardians came Thursday afternoon to take the students back home. In an audio clip recorded inside the hall, Provost Prof Sabita Rezwana Chowdhury categorically said the girls have been ousted for attacking hall unit BCL President Iffat Jahan Isha. The provost said she took the decision after checking the CCTV footage. The agitating students of Dhaka University brought out a procession on the campus protesting the hall authorities' action against some students, while Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men took position on the campus. At a rally held in front of the Razu Sculpture on the campus, Nurul Haq Nur, co-convener of 'Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Council', demanded the DU authorities ensure security of the general students in their halls and on the campus. Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Dhaka University unit took position at Milon Chattar and on the Central Library premises while the quota reformists were parading the campus protesting expulsion of some female students from Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall. On Thursday night, around 20 students of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall were allegedly forced out of their dormitory. But Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman said three students of the hall were handed over to their guardians to avert unwanted situation on the campus and they were not forced out of the hall. Nurul Haq Nur said, "We have learnt that Sufia Kamal Hall authorities threw out around eight female resident students early Friday ." He said, "We have listened to an audio record of Sufia Kamal Hall Provost Sabita Rezwana Rahman, threatening students to cancel studentship of two thousand resident students." "For the dirty activities, we demanded her removal immediately", he said. He also demanded that the university authorities bring the expelled students back to the hall immediately with dignity; otherwise the students will go for fresh agitation. Nur called upon the DU authorities to ensure security of students, including male and female, who took part in quota reform movement. He also demanded immediate implementation of Prime Minister's announcement about quota annulment by issuing gazette notification. Meanwhile, Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) kicked out a resident student from the hall as he took part in demonstration protesting expulsion of some female students frm Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall early Friday. The victim is Eyasir Arafat, a second year student of International Business Department. However, the hall unit BCL President Hafizur Rahman denied the allegation. Meanwhile, four students of Begum Rokeya Hall also protested the Thursday night's incident as Vice Chancellor Akhtarruzzaman came to the hall on Friday evening. Chhatra Union of Dhaka University unit also brought out a torch procession on the campus on Friday protesting the Thursday night's incident. Of the expelled students, Kamrunnahar Liza had earlier expelled by BCL and Farhin was 'handed over' to her local guardian around 10:30pm on Thursday. Sharmin Akhter of Mathematics department was seen coming out of the hall along with her local guardian around 12:00am. Identity of another student, who came out of the hall around 12:15 am on a motorbike with her local guardian, is yet to be known. According to the university rule, resident female students are not allowed to go outside the hall after 9:30pm. After taking special permission, the time could be extended until 10:00pm. Refuting allegation, Provost Sabita Rezwana Rahman said, "We called a number of students to hall office for investigation and checking their mobile phones as they were spreading rumours through fake Facebook accounts. "We also called guardians of some students to inform about their daughters' activities. Three students have been handed over to their local guardians. But we didn't expel the students or cancel their seat." DU VC told the reporters, 'The guardians of the three students were called in only to inform that their children were allegedly spreading rumours on Facebook. "It was a due responsibility of the hall authorities to inform the guardians after identifying those students who are spreading false information. "It was done to safeguard the dignity of the hall and all the students," he said, adding "So, by doing this, the hall authorities did a good job". "The VC also assured that no student was thrown out of the hall late Thursday night neither left alone on the street," the VC said. "The three students were handed to their families and another was allowed to stay in the hall as her father reached the hall late from Dhamrai," he added. Besides, the three will be able to take part in the scheduled sporting events in the university, the VC said.
