TANGAIL, Mar 30: The farmers of different char areas are expecting bumper yield of groundnut this year. Besides, they will be happy if they get fair price of their produce in the market.
The farmers of Char Bharua, Chartarai, Balarampur, Kuthiboyra, Ramail and Basidkal in Arjuna Union, and Rulipara, Gobindapur, Rampur, Rayer Basalia and Dikrichar in Gabsara Union under Bhuapur Upazila are passing busy times in taking care of their groundnut fields.
The farmers generally sow seeds during the Bengali month of Kartik when the water level of Jamuna reduces and numerous chars appear on the riverbed and harvest the produce in Chaitra. The farmers can harvest the yield after two or three months.
Farmer Akbar Ali of Sonaimui Village said, "The groundnut farming requires less cost than other crops. Groundnut is tasty and delicious; so its demand is high. Not only are the farmers of this village, but those of neighbouring villages are also cultivating groundnut."
Sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension here said groundnut has been cultivated on 2,136 hectares of char lands in the district. The farmers are getting interested to cultivate groundnut day by day as they are getting fair price of the produce.
Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer Farhanul Kabir said, the demand of groundnut is high as it contains vitamins. It provides food and edible oil. The green leaves of groundnut are good sources of fodder. The production of groundnut here is also good in this season. The farmers are getting interested to its cultivation as it requires less cost than other crops.
"Nearly 1,000 farmers of Gopalpur and Bhuapur upazilas will be benefited this year from the cultivation. We hope that the production of this year will exceed the previous record," he added.
